National Apprenticeship Week 2025 is all about shining a light on the incredible journeys of apprentices and how these experiences shape future careers. At InterQuest, we’re proud to support the next generation of professionals, and today, we’re spotlighting Zara Nisar, who has just completed her finance apprenticeship under the guidance of Catriona Molloy, Financial Controller at InterQuest.

Catriona played a key role in mentoring Zara throughout her apprenticeship, helping her gain valuable hands-on experience in finance. In this Q&A, Catriona and Zara reflect on the journey, key lessons learned, and advice for future apprentices.

Q&A with Zara Nisar and Catriona Molloy, Financial Controller at InterQuest

Catriona Molloy: Zara, it’s been a pleasure working with you during your apprenticeship. Can you tell us a bit about what inspired you to pursue a finance apprenticeship?

Zara Nisar: "I've always been hardworking and driven to achieve my best. After studying A-Levels, I never had the chance to sit an exam due to COVID-19, which left me rethinking my next steps. Finance has always interested me, and when I discovered the apprenticeship route, I knew it was the perfect way to gain hands-on experience while earning a qualification."

Catriona Molloy: That makes a lot of sense. So, why did you choose to undertake your apprenticeship with InterQuest, and what attracted you to our finance department?

Zara Nisar: "InterQuest stood out to me because it’s a well-established company with a strong sense of community. I wanted to be part of an organization where I could develop my skills while feeling valued. The finance department, especially under your guidance, offered the perfect mix of learning opportunities, career progression, and recognition for hard work."

Catriona Molloy: I’m glad you felt supported! Throughout your apprenticeship, what are some of the most valuable skills you've developed?

Zara Nisar: "So many! Analyzing financial data, improving my time management, sharpening my critical thinking skills, and—most importantly—building my confidence. Every challenge helped me grow, both professionally and personally."

Catriona Molloy: Those are essential skills in finance. How do you think your apprenticeship has prepared you for the next stage of your career?

Zara Nisar: "The combination of practical experience and structured learning has given me the knowledge and skill set to work efficiently in finance. I now understand processes more clearly, which helps everything run smoothly. It’s an experience you simply can’t get from studying alone."

Catriona Molloy: That’s true! For someone considering an apprenticeship in finance, what advice would you give them?

Zara Nisar: "Go for it! An apprenticeship gives you hands-on experience while allowing you to earn a qualification. You’ll develop key skills, gain industry insights, and make valuable connections—all while building your career from day one."

Catriona Molloy: That’s solid advice. Looking ahead, how do you see your career progressing after completing your apprenticeship?

Zara Nisar: "I’m excited to keep learning and growing! I plan to continue my studies while taking on more responsibility. The great thing about an apprenticeship is that it sets you up with a strong foundation for the future."

Catriona Molloy: It’s been great to see your progress firsthand. Have there been any mentors or colleagues who have significantly influenced your development?

Zara Nisar: "Absolutely. You, Catriona, have been instrumental in helping me understand the 'why' behind financial processes. And Sam has been a huge help with day-to-day tasks, giving me the confidence to take on more complex work. Having that kind of support makes all the difference."

Catriona Molloy: That means a lot! Lastly, what has been your proudest achievement during your apprenticeship?

Zara Nisar: "Developing my confidence—both professionally and personally. When I first started, I wasn’t sure how I’d adapt to a workplace environment. Now, I feel capable and ready to tackle new challenges. It’s a great feeling!"

The Importance of Apprenticeships

Zara's journey highlights the real-world impact of apprenticeships. They provide a structured yet flexible way to develop critical workplace skills while earning a qualification.

Unlike traditional education, apprenticeships immerse individuals in a professional environment from day one. This hands-on approach fosters adaptability, problem-solving, and confidence—qualities that make apprentices highly sought-after in the job market.

As National Apprenticeship Week 2025 draws to a close, it’s clear that apprenticeships aren’t just an alternative to university; they are a proven pathway to career success. Whether you’re taking your first steps into the workforce or considering a career change, an apprenticeship can be a powerful way to gain experience, build connections, and secure a future in your chosen field.
